DOT Guidelines

Drug and alcohol testing under Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines:
  • Federal guidelines require drug and alcohol testing under these circumstances:
    • pre-employment testing (drug screening only)
    • post-accident
    • random testing
    • reasonable-suspicion testing
    • return-to-duty testing
    • post-treatment program
  • Federal guidelines require covered employers to have a written drug and alcohol policy that includes the following:
    • conduct prohibited
    • circumstances of testing
    • consequences of refusal
    • actions to be taken as a result of a positive test
    • rights of an employee or applicant
  • Federal guidelines also require covered employers to:
    • provide a drug and alcohol employee awareness program (EAP) that gives employees detailed information about drug or alcohol misuse, the employer's testing policy, testing requirements and how and where covered employees can get help for drug or alcohol problems
    • provide supervisors with one hour of training on alcohol misuse and one hour of training on drug use
    • provide the opportunity for rehabilitation, if test is positive
  • Drugs tested for include:
    • amphetamines
    • cocaine
    • opiates (including heroin)
    • phencyclidine (PCP)
    • THC metabolite (marijuana)
  • Breath alcohol must be tested by certified technicians.
