Employer Responsibilities

To help employers provide confidential and accurate drug and alcohol testing within regulatory guidelines, we require that client employers establish written policies that do the following.

  • Outline client drug and alcohol testing procedures, according to state or federal regulations. This policy will be revised as needed.
  • Describe procedures to be followed if an applicant or employee refuses to submit to drug and alcohol screening. Work Care Center Occupational Medicine will not proceed with collection and will inform the employer if this occurs.
  • Describe procedures to be followed in the event of a positive drug or alcohol test.
  • Communicate drug and alcohol testing procedures to employees.
  • Provide employees with company-specific drug testing (chain of custody) forms, and ask them to bring picture identification to the drug and alcohol testing site. Work Care Center will not proceed with testing without proper identification.
  • Ensure employees are accompanied to the testing site in post-accident and reasonable-suspicion situations, and remain there throughout the drug and alcohol test.
  • Designate one person and one alternate to whom drug and alcohol results can be given in a confidential manner.
  • For breath alcohol testing, Work Care Center Occupational Medicine requires that:
    • employers designate a company contact and an alternate who can receive telephoned results 24 hours a day or within the time period the company will be testing
    • employers ensure breath alcohol results are confidential, by training the company contact to ask the person calling with the results for the Work Care Center issued password
    • if the company contact or alternate is unavailable to receive breath alcohol test results, the company will not test during that period
    • in the event of a positive breath alcohol test result (at or above 0.08 breath alcohol concentration), a company contact will arrive at the collection site to arrange transportation for the employee
